Silver Kob (Argyrosomus inodorus)

The fish is found coasts of South Africa and Nambia and preferred by commercial and recreational fishermen. It can reach 145 cm length and prefers benthopelagic and brackish waters. It is presented as mostly fresh and sometimes frozen for sales.               

Silver Kob is one of the species of 3 different kob.

Mostly, it is commercial catched, but acc to Stellenbosch University, “It is a fish that has promising development, well adaptation to culture and has potencial of aquaculture” and “It is a strong and compeitive fish.”

In addition, acc. to SASSI,Southern African spawning stocks of  silver kob, dusky kob and squaretail kob have been almost extincted  for 6% and 9% of their population. According to predicts of SASSI, the fish will be placed to Red List of IUCN.

However, SASSI said that they are “resilient and fast growing species”.

This Fishery is placed Fishery Development Project which WWF and SASSI believe that it will be very positive development.

In the future, farming will be sustainable source of silver kob.
